Born of Nze Nwauwa and Mrs Veronica Irechukwu (nee Ibeto) of Uburuekwe, Prof (Chief) Apollos Nwauwa is Professor of History and African Studies at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA. Educated both in Nigeria and Canada, Prof Nwauwa earned his BA (Hons) from Bendel State (now Ambrose Alli) University, Ekpoma before leaving for Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (on full scholarship) where he earned his MA and PhD degrees in 1993. Thereafter, he accepted a university teaching position in the United States of America. Prof Nwauwa has taught for over 20 years in various higher institutions in Nigeria, the USA and Ghana, including former Bendel State University and University of Calabar both in Nigeria, and Rhode Island College, Brown University and now Bowling Green State University in the US. He rose through the teaching ranks and became a full professor in 2009. Prof Nwauwa served as the Director of Africana Studies Program at Bowling Green State University; he also received the prestigious Carnegie Diaspora Fellowship as a visiting Professor at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana in 2017.
Years Teaching Experience
With his teaching and research focus on modern Africa and African diaspora, Prof Nwauwa has published extensively, including 10 books (both monographs and co-edited works) and over 30 scholarly publications in many reputable international journals such as Anthropos (Germany); Cahiers D’ Etudes Africaines (France); Africa Quarterly (India); Journal of Asian and African Studies (Israel); History in Africa (USA); Canadian Journal of African Historical Studies (Canada); and Ufahamu (USA). Prof Nwauwa is the editor of Ofo: Journal of Transatlantic Studies and serves in the editorial boards of many international journals. Currently, he serves as a member of Board of Trustees of many organizations and has held several non-academic positions worldwide, including Chairman of Nigerian Diaspora Movement, President of Igbo Studies Association, Chairman of Nigerian Association of Greater Toledo, Secretary-General of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization, SecretaryGeneral of African Diaspora Congress, Chairman of Ekwe League of Professionals, and many others.
Professor Nwauwa has received notable mention in many newspapers across the globe, including News Agency of Nigeria, Toledo Blade, Ohio, Providence Journal, Rhode Island, Sentinel Tibune, Ohio, and South African Broadcasting Corporation. He was conferred with the chieftaincy title as Odenigbo of Ekwe in 2011 by Ezearo II of Ekwe and another title as Ohamadike of Umuchieze by Eze (Dr) Enyeribe Onuoha of Ihiteaforukwu, Mbaise also in 2011 in recognition of his scholarly accomplishments, community engagement and continuing service to humanity. Prof Nwauwa is married with two children.
